Episode 58: Leaving the Wrong Relationship and Stepping Out in Faith – An Interview with Maria Gari

Episode 58: Leaving the Wrong Relationship and Stepping Out in Faith – An Interview with Maria Gari

How do you find the courage to leave a relationship you know is wrong and step out in faith that God has something better planned? We are so grateful to talk to Maria Gari (@runningmyselftogether) about her experience ending a long-term relationship. A few questions we ask Maria:

  • How did you find the courage to step out of the relationship after investing so much hope and time into that person?
  • What is your advice for healing and moving forward after a break up, especially a long term relationship, where you pictured and planned a future with them?
  • What is your advice for women who feel they could be in the wrong relationship but are scared to leave?
  • What is your advice for a woman in a season of waiting?

Maria Gari is the founder of RunningMyselfTogether, a ministry dedicated to bringing Christ’s light to women through running and mental health awareness. She is a cradle-Catholic who discovered her worth in Christ while working through her eating disorder recovery. She now writes, speaks, is a run coach, and leads pilgrimages to help women understand who they are as daughters of God and eradicate the stigma around mental health in the Church.

One of the very first episodes we ever did was on anxiety. This was something we bonded over early on in our friendship, our willingness to be vulnerable about our mental health struggles. It’s been over two years now…so how are we doing?

Episode 40: Should You Save Sex for Marriage?

Episode 40: Should You Save Sex for Marriage?

It has been the traditional Christian ethic to save sex for marriage, but is it worth it? Will saving sex until marriage be a decision you regret? In this episode, Jacque and Megan discuss:

  • Does God call us to save sex for marriage?
  • What is the purpose of sex?
  • Does our biology tell us to wait until marriage?

We also address some common objections we have heard against saving sex for marriage and what our personal thoughts are.

This is obviously a touchy issue for many people, and we would love to hear your thoughts! If you have questions, additional thoughts, or even objections, feel free to reach out to us on our Instagram or by email

Episode 29: Purity Culture, Modesty, Body Image, & Healing from Sexual Sin

Episode 29: Purity Culture, Modesty, Body Image, & Healing from Sexual Sin

Trigger Warning: This episode references sexual assault and disordered eating.

Jacque and Megan talk to Mary about purity culture: what it is, family dynamics, modesty, body image, and more. Purity Culture is largely understood to be a Christian sub-culture beginning around 1990 in conservative evangelical circles. It is characterized by efforts to promote sexual abstinence prior to marriage as well as emphasizing women to be “appropriately submissive”. While the intentions in this movement may or may not be pure (pun intended), it is important to talk about the lasting effects, and lingering shame, on those who grew up within it. Mary also shares some spectacular wisdom in this episode on healing from sexual sin and managing misplaced shame.

Episode 28: Why Do We Bleed? A Theology of Menstruation

Episode 28: Why Do We Bleed? A Theology of Menstruation

Women often feel shame, disgust, embarrassment, or annoyance at their periods, but is that how menstruation should be viewed? In this episode, Jacque and Megan interview Kerena Lawler who has developed a theology of menstruation. She says that the menstrual cycle tells a story: creation, fall, redemption, and future restoration. Some questions discussed in this episode:

  1. Why is it valuable as women for us to be knowledgeable about our cycle?
  2. Why did God create women to menstruate?
  3. How do you think our reproductive cycle was before the fall? How should women view their periods now?
